We are elevating what has been a mid season favourite to our season opener.  Everyone is invited to bring along a selection of prints for round the table peer review and discussion.  Prints are not marked or scored; we want you to try new things, push the boundaries and breaking the rules – then we will discuss what makes for an interesting image.

12th NOVEMBER

Club Competition No.2     Subject theme LEADING LINES:  and, open prints

The key point about leading lines is that they take the viewer into your image to the place where you want their eye to rest. Typically, leading lines come into the frame from an edge or corner and could be a single element such as a winding stream, the two banisters of a rising staircase, or multiple objects pointing to a subject. Getting down low or up high may help to make the leading lines more pronounced. You could create a connection between the leading lines and your subject to tell a story.

Judge: Kate Maxwell

                  CHRISTMAS PAUSE

7th JANUARY 2026

Club Competition No.3        Subject theme FILL THE FRAME:  and, open prints

This challenge is about creating impact by making your subject take up the entire frame of the image and removing any distractions or unnecessary details around the edges. It could be a close-up of a single subject such as a face, or a wider shot of multiple but similar elements perhaps with one standing out from the rest such as a striking figure in a crowd. The subject should be clear and defined. Think about how you can use lighting, colour and texture to highlight key features.

Judge: Mike Glyde

 4th MARCH

Club Competition No.4         Subject theme MINIMALISM: and, open prints

Minimalism is all about simplicity and using negative space to highlight the shape and form of the subject: a distant figure on an empty beach, an insect on a petal, or a single bubble to give a few examples. This is about shape and form, texture and light, removing every element that is a distraction from the subject.

Over years of dabbling in a number of genres, looking for his 'niche' he is begining to feel that he has found it: Observational Photography - defined by Colin as: “Seeking and finding images in unexpected places”. This talk is a tour through his more recent work in the genre. "Photography is about showing what you see, not just illustrating what is there".

It might be literal (Three Men in a Boat) or subtle (Great Expectations), funny (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) or serious (Unforgiven) – the possibilities are endless. Try to tell a story (but not the whole book or film!). Use the book or film title should be the caption/title of your image.   Your three images should represent three different book or film titles.
